Cream was always my baby. He talks about them all night if allowed. He looks very pleased — for the first time in an hour — and his voice warms when talking about their attitude. The thing that chuffed him most is that although Airforce was originally formed as a tentative and short-lived operation, it is going to last much longer than anyone — most of all Baker himself — thought.
Their decision has given me an enormous amount of confidence — just at the time I needed it most. Before Airforce, Baker says he was going to pack up and disappear. Despite this statement, you get the feeling that it might have been a harder decision than that. Baker needs the limelight and the audience before him. He admits that half the time, on a good night, the audience will play for him.
He says when the band played at the Albert Hall, it was so marvellous that none of them could remember playing the last number. I knew people would like it and that it would be both new and understandable to people. So little is either these days.
The band gave final concerts in London and New York in November, In January, , they released a post-breakup collection, Goodbye, with three old and three new songs. Ginger Baker discovered Africa before it got cool, and moved there.

The whole object of Cream was to become a huge pop band. Because of my classical background, it was easier for me to write things down and then try to realize them in the studio.
It took something like 10 days. We were in complete control of our destiny. He turned up when the album was nearly finished. The first album was something I was completely pleased with, to be quite frank. BAKER We were playing mostly at colleges for what seemed like extremely small money—only about three thousand bucks a gig. Murray was an influential New York DJ who put together these huge package shows that would feature dozens of bands.
They wanted us to play three numbers and thought it would only take three minutes! There were supposed to be four shows a night, and on the first night there was only time for three. The Who were also on the bill, and the show ran over by something like 80 minutes.
Murray the K was freaking out. After the second show, he came to our dressing room to try to get us to cut down our set. I was lying under the table, having consumed a bottle of Baccardi. The complete show by all the artists was only supposed to last two hours. We had been given three songs and were buried at the bottom of the bill. It was so wild that Murray the K had security guards to keep us in the building.
That was our introduction to New York and the United States. Ahmet told me to get whatever I could out of them before their visas expired.
When I arrived at the studio the next morning, the roadies were loading in these double stacks of Marshall cabinets and double-bass drums, and I thought, What the hell is this?
How did Felix get involved? We had no real game plan for making the album. At the end of the session, he asked if he could take a copy of the tape away to write some words for it. Anyway, Eric and I were both very impressed with Felix. We had some discussions with Ahmet and Tom Dowd and afterward got Felix to come in and produce the album. He got very involved musically.
Led Zeppelin took up our legacy. Totally from Jack. And I still find it hard to step out of that. Jack brought with him an immense experience of classical and jazz and popular music. Believe it or not, when Cream was evolving its ideology of what we wanted the sound to be, the thing we were listening to most, apart from the blues, was Pet Sounds. That was Jack again. I loved the idea of that. Jack has always had the most beautiful melodies.
Just fantastic. Well, I owe that to Jack. It goes right back to my liking Joseph Locke and very traditional forms of singing and music as a kid.
I have to try hard not to let it get too sweet. How did that come about? They said that Jimi had one and so that was enough for me. I had to have one, too. I loved it because it sounded like someone talking and it reminded me of Sparky and those kids records with all the effects. Why did Cream split up? Well, the workload was pretty severe. We were playing six nights a week and I lost weight until I was about nine stone and I looked like death.
I was in bad shape. I think that all added to the psychology of the situation, which was pretty tricky at the best of times. The band made its unofficial debut at the Twisted Wheel on 29 July In October the band also got a chance to jam with Jimi Hendrix , who had recently arrived in London. Hendrix was a fan of Clapton's music, and wanted a chance to play with him onstage.
It was during the early organisation that they decided Bruce would serve as the group's lead vocalist. The band's debut album, Fresh Cream , was recorded and released in The album reached number 6 in the UK charts and number 39 in the US. The rest of the songs were written by either Jack Bruce or Ginger Baker.
The track " Toad " contained one of the earliest examples of a drum solo in rock music as Ginger Baker expanded upon his early composition "Camels and Elephants", written in with the Graham Bond Organisation. Early Cream bootlegs display a much tighter band showcasing more songs. But a mere two months later, the setlist shortened, with the songs then much longer.
There was little impact, as impresario Murray the K placed them at the bottom of a six-act bill that performed three times per date, eventually reducing the band to one song per concert. Disraeli Gears is often considered to be the band's defining effort, successfully blending psychedelic British rock with American blues. In addition to "Strange Brew" and "Tales of Brave Ulysses", Disraeli Gears features "Sunshine of Your Love", which became the group's unofficial anthem, and is probably their best-known song today.
In a last-ditch attempt to salvage something from the long and fruitless night at his apartment, the bleary-eyed Bruce pulled out his double bass again and played a riff. At that point, Brown looked out the window and saw the sun was about to rise: "It's getting near dawn", he said to himself. Brown put the words on paper then thought some more: "When lights close their tired eyes". The album was originally slated for release in the summer of , but the record label opted to scrap the planned cover and repackage it with a new psychedelic cover, designed by artist Martin Sharp , and the resulting changes delayed its release for several months.
Although the album is considered one of Cream's finest efforts, it has never been well represented in the band's live sets. The concerts were a great success and proved very influential on both the band itself and the flourishing hippie scene surrounding them. Upon discovering a growing listening audience, the band began to stretch out on stage, incorporating more time in their repertoire, some songs reaching jams of twenty minutes. Long, drawn-out jams in numbers like "Spoonful", "N. In came the band's third release, Wheels of Fire , which topped the American charts.
The album was recorded in a spate of short sessions in from July to June The Wheels of Fire studio recordings showcased the band moving away from the blues and more towards a semi- progressive rock style highlighted by odd time signatures and various orchestral instruments.
Another song, "Politician", was written by the band while waiting to perform live at the BBC. Clapton's second solo from "Crossroads" has made it to the top 20 in multiple "greatest guitar solo" lists. After the completion of Wheels of Fire in mid, the band members had grown tired of their exhausting touring schedule and increasingly loud jamming, and wanted to go their separate ways.Cream - Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, And Jack Bruce. 26K likes.
